Things To Do Around Winnipeg, Manitoba While Staying at The House That Love Built

An aerial photo taken with a drone shows a top view down on a large, grey house surrounded by trees.

Located a short drive (35 minutes) south of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada is the ideal vacation destination of The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast. It is a peaceful, and serene place to unwind, relax and rejuvenate. Although there are a lot of things to do at the bed and breakfast, we also encourage you to experience many local attractions around St Pierre-Jolys and Winnipeg.

Outdoor Excursions

After purchasing the house located at 471 Jolys Avenue West in St. Pierre-Jolys, which had moved from the site of a farm located near St. Jean Baptiste following the 1950s flood, Fawn Purnell had dreams of renovating this space into a home for family, friends, students and travelers. Her goal was to create a bright and cheerful space that was welcoming to all. The home would require extensive renovations in order to keep its original charm while updating and modernizing it. This large-scale project was completed by Fawn’s sons (construction workers), friends and adult ESL students. Through this labour of love came the inspiration for the name The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast. The name and the purpose are a fitting tribute to the earlier origins of the home. It is the former childhood home of Manitoba Jazz musician, composer and instructor, Larry Roy, whose mother, Madam Roy, taught piano lessons out of the house to local children. Upon her passing, Monsieur Roy, Larry’s father, opened the home up to men who were in need of somewhere warm to live.

Crow Wing Trail

For the more outdoor adventure seekers, explore the hiking trails. The Crow Wing Trail is the longest section of the Trans Canada Trail in Manitoba at 200 kilometers, and closely follows the route of a Red River OxCart Trail used in the mid-1800s. It is located on Treaty 1 land, the original lands of the Anishinaabe, and the homelands of the Red River Metis. It connects Winnipeg to Emerson. Along the trail, you will find many different excursions to participate in.

A Maze In Corn

A Maze in Corn offers different attractions for each season. The maze includes a scavenger hunt to keep you focused on the right path. August and September bring the Sunflower Expo with 8 acres of 40 varieties of sunflowers, including purple sunflowers. A tractor pulled wagon will bring you the ten-minute ride to the field where you will be greeted with live music, snack cart with freshly squeezed lemonade, wine and craft beer. Admission includes one freshly snipped sunflower, picked and cut by you. A Maze in Corn also provides a petting zoo for the animal lovers. Get your fill of soft, cuddly bunnies, alpacas, kittens, baby cows and donkeys. October brings the opening of the pumpkin barn where you will be able to hunt for your perfect “soon-to-be” jack-o lantern. At the pumpkin barn, you can also grab local honey and decorative or edible squash. You can also wander through the interactive Haunted Forest. During the winter months, journey through the world’s largest snow maze, enjoy a bonfire or slide down the snow mountain. Enjoy the experience of dining at The Den, an outdoor restaurant carved from 500,000 pounds of snow.

Maplewood Club de Golf

Maplewood Club de Golf is one of Manitoba’s premium golf courses and is located just an eight-minute drive from The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast.

Senkiw Swinging Bridge

Located 20 kilometers south of St. Malo, Manitoba is the Senkiw Swinging Bridge. It was constructed in 1946 to enable children to be able to cross the Roseau River to attend school. The bridge replaced the previous method of hoisting children across the river in a hand-powered cable basket.

O Roseau

O Roseau is a 200-acre site nestled in the Rapids Reach of the Roseau River valley at the edge of ancient Lake Agassis. It is the home of the Rainbow Trout Music Festival. It is 3 amazing days of music and camping, while celebrating local music and musicians of all genres.

Manitoba’s Tall Grass Preserve

Manitoba’s Tall Grass Preserve is located 2.5 kilometers east of Tolstoi, Manitoba. Most of the lands are open yearround for hiking, bird-watching, and photography. It has a 1.5-kilometer interpretive trail that guides visitors through a portion of the preserve. Held on the 2nd Saturday of August, the Annual Prairie Day highlights the flora and fauna within the preserve. Visitors can end their day here with a traditional Ukrainian meal and celebration. While here, visit St. Michael’s, the first Ukrainian Greek Orthodox church built in Canada. It has been in continual use since its consecration and stands as a symbol of the Ukrainian Immigrants’ faith and determination to preserve their religion in a new land. Artifacts from the early Ukrainian settlements can be seen at nearby Gardenton Ukrainian Museum.

It is housed in a teaching convent that, at one time, serves as a public school. Also on the museum grounds is the Goulet House. It dates back to the 1800s and is an astounding example of a Red River style house that was built from hand-cut logs. In April, the museum hosts the Sugaring-Off Festival where visitors can learn about the production of maple syrup and enjoy the taste of “taffy in the snow”. A tour guide may be available with advanced bookings.

The St. Malo Market 4 Kids
