A Charming Bed and Breakfast Near Winnipeg, Manitoba

An aerial photo taken with a drone shows a top view down on a large, grey house surrounded by trees.

Nestled in the small but charming, bilingual village of St. Pierre-Jolys lays the 108 year old, renovated farmhouse known as The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast; just a short 35 minutes/50 kilometers from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Fawn Purnell, owner since 2018, welcomes you into a paradise that offers peace and rejuvenation in three different rooms (accommodations for infants and children also available) amongst a backdrop of cottage style gardens. From its barnwood style floors giving off a rustic feel to its open-family concept with modern conveniences, you are sure to find relaxation in this beautiful oasis.

A Historical Vacation Destination

After purchasing the house located at 471 Jolys Avenue West in St. Pierre-Jolys, which had moved from the site of a farm located near St. Jean Baptiste following the 1950s flood, Fawn Purnell had dreams of renovating this space into a home for family, friends, students and travelers. Her goal was to create a bright and cheerful space that was welcoming to all. The home would require extensive renovations in order to keep its original charm while updating and modernizing it. This large-scale project was completed by Fawn’s sons (construction workers), friends and adult ESL students. Through this labour of love came the inspiration for the name The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast. The name and the purpose are a fitting tribute to the earlier origins of the home. It is the former childhood home of Manitoba Jazz musician, composer and instructor, Larry Roy, whose mother, Madam Roy, taught piano lessons out of the house to local children. Upon her passing, Monsieur Roy, Larry’s father, opened the home up to men who were in need of somewhere warm to live.

Celebrate Canadian Culture, Heritage and Life

A unique feature to The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast is the celebration of Canadian culture, heritage, and life with a focus on Manitoba grown products. Hand crafted natural soap is made using real, locally grown fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices, alfalfa from owner Fawn’s stomping grounds of Tolstoi, Manitoba, St. Pierre-Jolys’ very own maple syrup, nourishing clays and pure essential oils. Several of these hand-crafted soaps celebrate Fawn’s Metis culture and Indigenous heritage, using the Ojibway language to name them, and using local spots for names. Waawatee, meaning Northern Lights, Metis Pride, St. Malo Beach, Crow Wing Trail, and Sand Between My Toes are some of Fawn’s more recognizable natural hand-crafted soaps. Other products include all natural deodorants, body butters, and tub teas (made naturally with Epsom salts, pure essential oils, and a collection of Manitoba buds, herbs and spices – pop the bag into your bath water). All of these products are naturally scented with shea and cocoa butter, and can be used on your face, hands and body, or used as a massage lotion and lip balm. Each product comes in a hand-sewn reusable cotton drawstring soap saver-scrubby bag made by Epic de St. Malo (Smile of St. Malo), a non-profit organization that is committed to advocate and promote inclusion on the community and surrounding areas for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Products containing shea or cocoa butter come from an organization that employs women in Ghana with fair trade employment. When purchasing these products, you are getting a natural product while supporting communities locally and globally.

Adventure, beautiful cottage style gardens, delicious meals from locally grown foods, relaxation and rejuvenation await you. Enjoy the art of hand-crafted soaps, celebrate Metis and Indigenous heritage, and explore the charming village of St. Pierre-Jolys and the many nearby attractions when you book your vacation. Surrounded by nature and peacefulness, you will feel like family when you are welcomed by Fawn and her family and employees at The House That Love Built Bed and Breakfast.
